Power Plant & Pods Phase Percentage Completion: 65%
Project Start: Q4 2019
Anticipated Completion: Q2 2024
Ongoing Activities:
• Construction of the new Red Hook West trash management area by the West Pod adjacent to building 1W (135 Richards)
• Backfilling of the excavated work area at Columbia Street
o The work in this area included installation of underground conduit to help better protect Red Hook buildings from unplanned utility outages
• Construction of lily pad passive flood protection measures throughout the site
o The flood protection measures will help keep water out of flood-prone areas during a storm
• Continued construction of all utility pods (small buildings) including but not limited to installation of new doors and frames, and removal of scaffolding
• Installation of façade panels, staircases, walls, ramps, and electrical equipment in the East Plant
o The East Plant will hold standby generators and boiler equipment above the flood level to provide full backup power and heat to NYCHA Red Hook buildings
• Installation of site lighting posts and conduit throughout the site
o The new site lighting will be brighter and more energy efficient
• Basement floodproofing work throughout the site to protect flood-prone areas
o All basements except for building 6 (62 Mill Street) are expected to be completed by the end of 2023
• [Non-Sandy work activity] Local Law 11 façade inspection and repair work at building 25 (11 Lorraine)
o Sidewalk sheds have been installed by this building and will remain until the work is completed
Upcoming Activities:
• [Non-Sandy work activity] Local Law 11 façade inspection and repair work at buildings 20 (442 Columbia) and 21 (458 Columbia)
• Tree and shrub plantings throughout the site
Other:
• NYCHA’s Pest Management Department has been conducting regular visits to Red Hook to install and/or service bait stations, collapse rodent burrows, and close gaps in building basements to reduce the rodent population on site.
o Additionally, the Sandy contractor has continued to install and/or service bait stations, collapse rat burrows every week, and clean the construction work zones daily.
