RHI’s Education Team is looking for an Academic Advisor

We are looking for a determined person, dedicated to the academic success of our scholars at RHI. Someone who is dedicated to the mission of RHI and the work that we do, with great communication skills, experience working with youth in an after school setting. Advisors help young people learn through academic enrichment activities, review content being taught in school, and support them to complete projects and homework assignments. Academic Advisors meet weekly with the Education Manager and Middle School Team to review individual “participant improvement plans” and explore avenues toward educational success. An Advisor may provide academic support in one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions, and oversees the work of High School Students working as tutors for the middle school program. RHI is Hiring: Middle School Youth Worker

We are looking for an experienced Group Leader that is committed to the mission of RHI, and has at least 1 year of experience working Middle School youth in an after-school setting. The ideal candidate must be passionate about working with youth, work well with a team and have exemplary problem solving skills. Summary:The Youth Worker will assist in providing programs and services to young people in RHI’s youth programs. This person is also responsible for planning and executing excursions for middle school participants. NYCHA is BACK in the news.... From Kings County Politics.com: Arrests have already been made and there is an ongoing investigation into a massive kickback scheme involving New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) jobs to repair Superstorm Sandy damage, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation. KCP first reported the kickback scheme last Friday as happening in Coney Island, but has learned since it is a citywide investigation involving construction companies and nefarious characters known on the street as “the coalition,” getting low-income individuals on NYCHA job sites at prevailing wages for kickback “donations.” Sources say the city’s Department of Investigation (DOI) is involved in the investigation. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is also looking through several complaints regarding the investigation. Read full article here...

Brooklyn Nets Basketball Academy Comes to Red Hook!

Where: 800 Henry Street (Behind Red Hook Recreation Center)

Children ages 6-14 are invited to learn basketball fundamentals and skills with training from Academy coaches. All skill levels welcome.

Hercules in Red Hook

Where: The Flagpole 450 Columbia Street

On Thursday, August 16 at 6 PM, we will present readings from Euripides' The Madness of Hercules at The Flagpole, 450 Columbia Street in the Red Hook Houses. Actors Frankie Faison (The Wire), Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Glenn Davis (24) and Councilman Jumaane Williams will take part. About an act of unspeakable violence by a man revered by his friends and fellow soldiers, the ensuing discussion will focus on the impact of violence on families and communities as well as the perpetrator. This event is free, open to all, and free ice cream will be served. We are also looking for panelists for this evening. Panelists watch the performance with the audience and afterward, speak for about 3-4 minutes--from their hearts and guts--about what rang true for them in this ancient play. Their words act as a bridge for the facilitated community conversation that follows. We would welcome your suggestions for a panelist. If you'd like to come--and bring a group!--please let me know!
