Science Editor
The Broadcast is a virtual experience in the likeness of Pioneer Works. Pioneer Works is dust and wood, cement and steel. The Broadcast by contrast is immaterial, an idea, a thought experiment, an aspiration. For years, that concept lived only in our minds as a cloud of electrical neural activity. Under the uncomfortable pressure of lockdown, the online magazine was published as a beta version in April 2020. In May 2021, we launched a more fully-realized incarnation of this virtual extension of our physical campus, a cultural space for interdisciplinary discourse on Music, Technology, Science, and the Arts: Broadcast 2.0

We seek a science editor to join our team at The Broadcast, based at Pioneer Works, for a part-time position (roughly 30 hours per week) with an eye to rolling into a full-time position with benefits down the line. We place an emphasis on blue-skies and evergreen, big ideas across the sciences. The editor should feel aligned with our motto that “Science is Part of Culture,” as well as possess abilities in the art of journalism, and non-fiction more generally. The successful candidate would work closely with the editor-in-chief, the astrophysicist and author Janna Levin, as well as editors from across disciplines.

Pay is commensurate with experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Solicit pitches from exceptional science writers.
Develop your own pitches, assign them to freelance writers, and work with the contributors to ensure the content is in line with the mission and editorial quality of The Broadcast.
Ability to assign and manage workflow with the editor-in-chief and other editors.
Brainstorm and strategize new content with The Broadcast editors.
Actively cultivate relationships with established science and culture writers.
Work closely with the internal marketing team to ensure all content is distributed across relevant channels.
Work with our archive of live events in order to render them publishable through The Broadcast’s multimedia channels.
Re-conceive of upcoming exhibitions and live events for publication on The Broadcast.
REQUIREMENTS
This candidate must be an excellent writer and editor with a deep understanding of the science and culture landscape.
A minimum of six years writing or editing for an established media organization.
A keen attention to detail and an appreciation for the granular nuances of language, style, and the writer’s voice.
Experience managing a team of freelance contributors and ensuring that all deadlines are met and within budget.
A proven ability to generate original ideas for creative and engaging arts and culture content.
The successful Candidate will be highly collaborative and very comfortable talking about how to most successfully execute stories with relevant stakeholders.
