NYCHA Recovery & Resilience Red Hook Houses Update

The New York City Housing Authority is building back safer, stronger and smarter by improving structural resiliency and infrastructure protection at Red Hook Houses. NYCHA's Recovery and Resilience Department (R&R) is pushing design boundaries in building reinforcements, storm surge protection, and infrastructure upgrades. To learn more about the R&R program visit https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nycha/about/recovery-resiliency.page Power Plant & Pods Phase Percentage Completion: 28% Project Start: Q4 2019 Anticipated Completion: Q4 2022 Ongoing Activities: • Permanent closure of first and second-floor windows next to the new utility pods across the site o The closures are necessary to construct the utility pods, which will house critical electrical and mechanical equipment above the flood elevation to better protect building services during a flood event o Approximately 40% of the required window closures have been completed o All residents have been notified via in-person meetings, phone calls, and/or flyers • Additional engagement is underway to residents in the pending apartments • The contractor, Adam’s European, will be working longer shifts near the utility pods by Red Hook East buildings 9 through 14 for the next two weeks o Robocalls to residents in neighboring buildings are underway • Excavation for and instillation of new underground electrical, heating, and plumbing lines across the site o The new electrical, heating, and plumbing lines will be installed throughout the site and will connect to the new utility buildings to service all of NYCHA Red Hook Upcoming Activities: • Continued installation of underground piping at the East Plant • Installation of metal framing at the utility pods next to Red Hook West buildings 2, 3, and 19

Power Plant & Pods Phase Percentage Completion: 24% Project Start: Q4 2019 Anticipated Completion: Q4 2022 Ongoing Activities: • Testing of foundation piles for the new East Plant (formerly 590 Clinton Street) o The piles will form the foundation of the new East Plant o Tests are performed on site to confirm the piles are capable of holding the load of the structure as designed o The East Plant will hold standby generators and boiler equipment above the flood level to provide full backup power and heat to NYCHA Red Hook buildings • Excavation for and instillation of new underground electrical, heating, and plumbing lines across the site, including Center Mall between buildings 13E (39 Centre Mall) and 15W (40 Centre Mall) o The new electrical, heating, and plumbing lines will be installed throughout the site and will connect to the new utility buildings to service all of NYCHA Red Hook • Wet and dry floodproofing of building basements to limit damage during a flood event Upcoming Activities: • The contractor, Adam’s European, will begin working double shifts at the East Plant, only, for the next two weeks from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm and 3:00pm to 10:30 o Although this work is not expected to affect residents robocalls to neighboring buildings are underway • Permanent closure of building 19 (426 Columbia) windows next to the new utility pod o The closures are necessary to construct the utility pods, which will house critical electrical and mechanical equipment above the flood elevation to better protect building services during a flood event o All residents have been notified via in-person meetings, phone calls, and/or flyers

Industrial Careers Training Program

When: November 8-20, 2021

Where: Makerspace at the Brooklyn Army Terminal

Industrial Career Pathways (ICP) Training Program, developed by Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation (SBIDC), is an industrial training program designed to connect local 18-24 year-old residents to quality manufacturing career opportunities. This two-week program will provide participants with work readiness skills for placement in well-paying industrial sector roles that offer pathways to meaningful careers. ICP will build career awareness and provide the preparation needed to develop careers in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, transportation and logistics.

THIS FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO:

Provide students with an overview of the manufacturing process and knowledge of career pathways

Create an understanding of technology use in manufacturing and hone skills in arithmetic and shop math needed for success in industrial settings

Provide exposure to a variety of southwest Brooklyn manufacturers, with focus on Sunset Park, Red Hook, Gowanus and the working waterfront

Develop knowledge of safe practices in a factory and warehouse environment including use of PPE, material handling, basic tool identification and use

Provide ongoing career and mentorship services through the SBIDC workforce team and local industrial business owners in the southwest Brooklyn region

Offer an hourly stipend for the entirety of the program as well as support with transportation

Starts November 8, 2021 and runs for two weeks
