Pioneer Works proudly presents the fifth annual Red Hook Regatta - a community event where we gather at Valentino Pier to watch homemade boats navigate the rough seas of New York City's shipping harbor. The event will feature free catered food and half time entertainment by Cora Dance, DJ sets by Red Hook Record Shop owner Bene Coopersmith, and activations by Pioneer Works artists and staff. Pioneer Works Community Happy Hour

Join Pioneer Works staff, artists-in-residence, and friends at Supersmith for happy hour. Each event spotlights a local chef or culinary organization. This month’s Happy Hour features Jenny Kwak of Haenyeo with music by Holy Hand Grenades. Haenyeo’s Happy Hour menu of free small bites includes grilled oysters in seaweed butter with baguette, grilled pork belly, grilled kimchi, fresh leaves for wrapping, tofu with chrysanthemum, and sesame eggplant. Haenyeo is named after the iconic “sea women” divers of Jeju Island, South Korea. Known for their iron-will, Haenyeo hold their breath for two to three minutes at a time while diving 30-40 feet deep to forage year-round for seafood like abalone, conch, octopus, urchin, and seaweed. Inspired by these community of women, Jenny Kwak, the original owner of Dok Suni’s and Do Hwa, opened Haenyeo six months ago. Nestled on the corner of 5th Ave and Carroll Street, Haenyeo has been described to have “a sparkle and sweetness you don’t always find in the smoke filled rooms of 32nd Street” by New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells. Ryan Sutton of Eater New York calls Haenyeo “a knockout of a Korean hangout in Park Slope.” Haenyeo is a seafood forward restaurant serving up dishes in a comforting, home-cooked Korean style but sometimes, with a playful twist. Experimental Cyanotypes by Pioneer Work

When: August 17-18, 2019

Where: Pioneer Works 159 Pioneer St, Brooklyn, NY 11231

In 1842, the astronomer Sir John Herschel discovered the cyanotype process, a photographic blueprint which was utilized extensively for its ability to quickly reproduce drawings and notes using the sun’s rays. In this class led by former Darkroom resident Kate Ovaska, we will experiment with materials as surfaces for cyanotypes including textured paper, unglazed ceramic tiles, wood, and fabric. By the end of the class, you will understand the chemistry behind a cyanotype print as well as how to prepare, expose, and develop them.

Free Summer Meals for Kids and Teens 18 and Under

Heading For Extinction (and what we can do about it)

Our planet is in ecological crisis: we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction triggered and sustained by human activity. Scientists believe we may have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown. This is an emergency.

Before the sea levels finally rise, before more storms and hurricanes, intensified by global oceanic warming, slosh into Red Hook, before Nature is so badly wounded it is no longer safe for our children, shall we not act? Shall not we speak up? Shall we rebel for Life?

In this public talk, climate speakers from Extinction Rebellion (XR) will share the latest climate science on where our planet is heading, discuss some of the current psychology around climate change, and offer solutions through the study of social movements.

Everyone is welcome and there will be time to ask questions and discuss afterwards. Entry is free.
