Free Legal Clinic for Small Businesses and Nonprofits

CGA and the Brooklyn Law School’s Center for Urban Business Entrepreneurship (CUBE) are partnering to bring CUBE’s Consultation Center, a free legal clinic for small businesses, to Southwest Brooklyn. The collaboration, CUBE’s first with a Brooklyn-based community development organization, will launch April 16, 2015, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the CGA Training Center located at 201 Columbia Street. During the Legal Clinic, attorneys who are Brooklyn Law School alums will provide free one-on-one legal consultations to small businesses and nonprofits with assistance from current Brooklyn Law School students. Topics covered will range from entity formation, intellectual property issues, licensing, permitting, to contracts and leases. Red Hook Community Justice Center’s: Youth Summer Internships and Jobs Fair

The Red Hook Community Justice Center will host our 6th Annual Youth Summer Internships and Jobs Fair! We will open our doors to young people between the ages of 14-21 throughout Brooklyn, and other parts of NYC in the hopes of providing young people with the chance to apply for paid and unpaid summer programming opportunities at the Justice Center and other local businesses and community based organizations. If you are an organization that would like to participate in the fair with work opportunities for youth this summer please contact a member of our staff. We can provide you with table space and the chance to recruit. If you are young person between the ages of 14 - 21+ please be sure to attend our fair. Red Hook Youth Court

Where: Red Hook Community Justice Center

Launched in 1998, the Red Hook Youth Court trains local teenagers to serve as jurors, judges, and attorneys, handling real-life cases involving their peers. The goal of the Court is to use positive peer pressure to ensure that young people committing low level crimes pay back the community and receive the help they need to avoid further involvement in the justice system. Part of the Red Hook Community Justice Center (RHCJC) , the Youth Court handles cases involving young people, ages 10-18 who have been cited for low-level offenses, such as vandalism, fare evasion, assault, and truancy. These are cases that typically receive “YD cards,” a police notation that results in neither sanctions nor links to social services. Thanks to a partnership with the New York Police Department, officers in the 72, 76, and 78 precincts, the Department of Probation, Brooklyn Law Department, the RHCJC’s on-site Criminal and Family courts refer juveniles who have admitted their involvement in such an incident to the Youth Court, where they go before a true jury of their peers.

EPA Testing for Lead near Red Hook Ball Fields

Testing for lead at the Red Hook ball fields (see attached fact sheet): On Monday, March 16, EPA began testing soil in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in the area of the former Columbia Smelting & Refining Works – Results of soil testing in October showed elevated levels of lead – The additional testing next week will help to better define the areas that will be cleaned up.
