Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space

In early February, near the centenary of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, a team of scientists announced the discovery of the century: the detection of waves in the shape of spacetime – gravitational waves. Over 1.3 billion years ago, two black holes collided, ringing spacetime like a drum, an event more powerful than any since the origin of the universe. An hour before the gravitational wave hit the Earth, two 4-kilometer long observatories on different coasts – part of the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) – were locked in observing mode. In the middle of the night, the scientists on the remote site in Washington abandoned the long day’s efforts and headed home, while the scientists in Louisiana put down their tools in frustration to leave the instrument undisturbed. At 4:50 am on September 14th, the gravitational wave came from the Southern sky and skimmed past Louisiana, ringing that machine first, before cruising at the speed of light to hit the observatory in Washington State, 10 milliseconds later. In her new book, Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space (Knopf, March 2016), astrophysicist Janna Levin recounts the obsessions, aspirations, and trials of the scientists who embarked on the arduous, fifty-year endeavor to capture gravitational waves. For a special evening at Pioneer Works, Levin will join Rainer Weiss, MIT professor emeritus and a primary LIGO architect, in a conversation about black holes, gravitational waves and the soundtrack of our universe. The discussion will be moderated by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning journalist John Hockenberry. –Guests Rainer Weiss, professor emeritus, MIT John Hockenberry, journalist, Emmy and Peabody Award winner Janna Levin, professor of physics and astronomy, Barnard/Columbia; Director of Sciences, Pioneer Works – Music After the talk musicians Greg Fox, Trevor Dunn and Grey McMurray will explore the soundtrack of our universe with a set of interstellar tunes based on the sounds of space. Manifesto by Jesse Ball- “Notes on My Dunce Cap”

Can we be so kind in our description?” -Jesse Ball, Notes on My Dunce Cap Acclaimed novelist Jesse Ball will discuss his new book, Notes on My Dunce Cap, and unveil a new manifesto on teaching on the eve of Pioneer Works’ second annual Summit on Pedagogy. Readers of Ball’s fiction will be thrilled to find a vision of creative education deeply aligned with the eerie, philosophical worlds of his novels and poetry. This event is free and open to the public. Those who are registered for the 2016 Summit on Pedagogy will receive a free copy of a limited-edition poster-size print of Ball’s manifesto. The poster will also be available for purchase. About Notes on My Dunce Cap: Notes on My Dunce Cap reconsiders hierarchy in the classroom, and the role of education as a context for creativity and collaboration. The volume also includes sample syllabi from Ball’s courses at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on everything from lucid dreaming to the theory of the Dérive; the Brothers Grimm, to a Franz Kafka Fancier Society. Ball also develops a dynamic process for workshop discussions based on Quaker practices of discernment, and incorporates theatrical elements to draw the most out of students and teachers alike. Notes is part of Groundworks, a Pioneer Works Press pocket series devoted to statements and propositions that elude categorization and seek to broaden the parameters of their subjects. About Jesse Ball: Jesse Ball (1978) Born in New York. The author of fourteen books, including Silence Once Begun, A Cure for Suicide, and the forthcoming How to Set a Fire and Why. His prizewinning works of absurdity have been published to acclaim in many parts of the world and translated into more than a dozen languages. He is also renowned for the unique courses he teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the syllabi of some of which are compiled in this volume with extended notes on pedagogy. Excerpt: “When I was asked to teach for the first time, I was deeply uncomfortable. I was not embarrassed or confused. But I was suspicious. My own path has always been meandering and I rarely learn what I am supposed to at the time when I am taught it. At such a time I am busy learning something else. Only later do I circle back. I began teaching with this suspicion, that I was wrong in having the class meet, and wrong in declaring expertise. This being true, I felt, I must do everything in my power to right the initial wrong, and I must make the class as strange, as fascinating, and as suited to each particular student as I can. If I have ten students in a class, and they all learn the same thing from a lesson, I am dismayed. Strong Actors for Sandy Monologues in Red Hook

Falconworks Theater Company is currently seeking strong actors who sing and move well for The Sandy Monologues. This production will tackle issues of race & class by zooming in on the lives of a diverse handful of residents who weathered the freak storm that raged from Hispaniola to the Great Lakes in late October of 2012. Auditions are Sunday, April 17, 2016 starting at 11:00 am with call backs the same day starting at 2:00 pm. You will get an appointment if your submission is accepted. If invited to audition you will be asked to sing and do a cold reading from the script. Rehearsing Saturdays and Sundays in May (5/7, 5/8, 5/14, 5/15, 5/21, 5/22, 5/28, 5/29 with additional evening rehearsals starting May 23). Must be available evenings from May 28 through June 2 (Tech week). Dress rehearsal will be Thursday, June 2. Performances June 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 & 12 (Friday through Sunday. 10 performances total with weekend matinee & evening performances).

ince the 1970s, quadraphonic sound has been discarded by the commercial audio world, only to be adopted by experimental composers and sound artists. Almost fifty years later, as we find ourselves in a state of technological saturation, what does it mean to continue the use of quad? Presented in collaboration with Lea Bertucci at Pioneer Works, sound artists MV Carbon, Tommy Martinez, C. Spencer Yeh, Ben Greenberg (Hubble), and collaborative duo, MSHR, explore four varying approaches to quadraphonic sound and its mesmeric effects in performance and with 4-channel video work by Victoria Keddie, centered around a classical cello revamped for surround sound.
