Ben Carson to visit NYCHA, local Housing and Urban Development administrator says

United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson will visit the New York City Housing Authority, an administrator with the department said Monday. Lynne Patton, head of HUD in New York and New Jersey, also promised to do everything in her power to make sure President Donald Trump visits NYCHA, the largest public housing system in the country, in his first term. “He’s a New Yorker born and raised and we would love nothing more than to support the great residents of the city,” she said at a NYCHA town hall. RHI is looking for an IT Associate: Reports to: Director of Operations Schedule: Part-time, 20 hours/week, flexible hours Summary/Description: The IT Associate is responsible for supporting Red Hook Initiative’s technology equipment and services, including daily, on-demand IT support for all staff. The IT Associate serves as a primary RHI liaison with external vendors providing technology services to RHI. Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the IT Associate include but are not limited to:  Provide routine IT support for RHI staff, such as creating and modifying users, resetting passwords, connecting to printers, and offering guidance on basic computer techniques and skills.  Troubleshoot equipment and/or internet failures as needed.  Support/Train staff to learn basic troubleshooting skills themselves and develop a culture of technological confidence and independence.  Oversee RHI’s password management system and work to improve staff adoption.  Orient new staff to their equipment and introduce them to RHI’s IT systems.  Manage RHI technology equipment. This includes inventory, upkeep and updates as designated by the Director of Operations.  Develop and manage an in-house ticketing system.  Serve as liaison/first point of contact to RHI’s contract IT vendor, Nonprofit Solutions Network. Engage additional outside IT support when needed.  Collaborate with RHI’s Digital Stewards team on technology projects as appropriate on trainings, workshops or seminars.  Collaborate with the Red Hook WIFI Project Manager as appropriate to support the expansion of the free wireless network in Red Hook.  Work with Operations team to identify areas where technology systems could be made more efficient and implement solutions.  Take on other tech projects as needed. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:  Strong computing skills  Strong customer/client service orientation  Strong project management and organizational skills  Detail oriented  Ability to create and manage external relationships  Patience for new learners  Ability to keep accurate records and statistics  Willingness to collaborate on projects and work with a team Experience and Qualifications:  High School Diploma or HSE  Some form of computer science training/courses preferred  A+ or Net+ Certifications or similar, or equivalent experience  Customer relations  Knowledge of Red Hook community and RHI mission and vision (resident preferred) Contact: (718) 858-6782 for more information.

Farm Manager, Added Value

Added​ ​Value​ ​Farms​ ​is a youth-centered urban farming and food justice nonprofit in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We create opportunities for teens to expand their knowledge base, develop their leadership skills, and positively engage with each other, their community, and the environment. We operate two urban farms sites, and our programs include a teen farm apprenticeship, a weekly farm stand, a CSA, and a school workshop program. We strive to transform vacant lands into vibrant urban farms, improve access to healthy, affordable produce, and nurture a new generation of green leaders. Position​ ​Overview: The Farm Manager is responsible for all crop production and farm maintenance at the 2.75 acre Red Hook Community Farm, located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The farm supplies our 70+ member CSA as well as our weekly farm stand. Working closely with Added Value’s education staff, the Farm Manager supports the training and ongoing mentorship of 7-25 high-school aged youth throughout the growing season. The position supports education and outreach work through ongoing school visits, regular volunteer hours, and special events. Responsibilities: ● Manage farm, greenhouse, storage areas; ● Develop and implement crop plan including seeding/planting/harvesting schedules with youth involved in all aspects of production; ● Employ organic pest management strategies as needed on the farm; ● Set up and maintain various irrigation systems; ● Support training and mentorship of Added Value youth farmers; ● Supervise ad hoc volunteer groups as well as weekly drop-in volunteer hours; ● Liaison and manage regular communication with CSA organizing committee; ● Develop relationships, manage orders, and handle deliveries for local restaurant buyers; ● Support planning, harvesting, and marketing activities for weekly youth-led farm stand; ● Keep annual budget, records, inventory, and harvest tallies; ● Collaborate on special events on the farm such as fundraisers and community festivals; ● Participate in staff meetings, social media outreach, grant writing, and strategic planning for the organization as a whole. Qualifications: ● 3-4 years in intensive, small farm, high-yield vegetable production; ● Expertise in organic vegetable growing, as well as compost management techniques; ● Demonstrated experience working with youth; ● Commitment to social justice; ● Ability to work collaboratively with those from various racial, ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds; ● Experience in the safe operation and general maintenance of farm tools and machinery; ● Seed propagation, succession planting, and season extension experience; ● Experience developing and executing an annual crop plan and maintaining farm records; ● Organized, detail-oriented - sets strong example for volunteers and youth; ● Comfortable using Microsoft suite and Google Drive; ● Able to work Tuesday-Saturday schedule through the growing season; ● Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ● Flexible, entrepreneurial with an ability to succeed with modest infrastructure; ● Able to lift up to 50 pounds; ● Must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to drive a cargo van in New York City. Preferred: ● Exposure to anti-oppression trainings and inquiry-based education; ● Experience in the operation of farm stands or markets; ● Knowledge of chicken and bee care; ● Social media savvy, particulary Instagram and Facebook; ● Familiar with Red Hook community as well as NYC urban agriculture community; ● Carpentry and other building skills.
