“Z” Exhibition Opening at Pioneer Works

When: Jun 11, 2015 6:00-9:00 pm

Where: Pioneer Works, Center for Art and Innovation (159 Pioneer Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn)

Z is an exhibition of unique, glass plate portraits by American photographer Robyn Hasty. The selection of portraits in Z are both canonical and enigmatic; formally classical compositions that subtly challenge gender-binary conventions by disorienting the perception of how gender is expressed and embodied. The title of the exhibition refers to a proposed gender-neutral pronoun. Working with transgender, cisgender, and a spectrum of genderqueer and gender nonconforming individuals, Hasty’s work deconstructs the rigid, often limiting representation of the nude body in search of a more diverse, fluid identity. Hasty’s subjects defiantly gaze directly at the viewer, inverting the traditional role of the photographer’s gaze by challenging the viewer to question their own boundaries and definitions. As a result, the series evokes connection while also being deeply transgressive, straddling a line between vulnerability and empowerment that defines Hasty’s process. Opening Reception: Thursday June 11 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm On View: June 11 – July 12 More Information: http://pioneerworks.org/exhibitions/

Falconworks Theater Company Presents “The Cherry Orchard”

When: June 11-21, 2015

Where: Red Hook Labs, 133 Imlay Street

Falconworks Theater Company will present “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov, June 11 to 21 at Red Hook Labs in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This production will adapt Chekhov’s play set in the years before the Russian Revolution to resonate in today’s times of social upheaval. Falconworks’ “Cherry Orchard” portrays a community not unlike Red Hook where many symbols of its history have been destroyed or co-opted, including the Revere Sugar Refinery and the Erie Basin graving dock. Chekhov’s passion-filled story portrays a sensual and volatile woman, suffering a terrible loss, who struggles to maintain her family heritage against a tidal wave of economic development. She and her family, a collection of wild eccentrics, await the impending foreclosure of their home. The play is a lens through which our audience might analyze the quickly shifting economic landscape of our own quaint neighborhood. This is the third year that Falconworks has presented a site-specific performance of a classic work of theater, adapted to illuminate questions facing the rapidly changing Red Hook community. Falconworks’ production of “An Enemy of the People” was selected one of New York City’s 15 best stage shows of 2013 by The L Magazine. Presented by Falconworks Theater Company at Red Hook Labs, 133 Imlay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231. Nearest cross streets are Pioneer St & Visitation Place; take B61 bus to Visitation Place. Opens June 11 with performances June 11-13 and June 17-21 at 8:00 pm. Matinee performances June 13 & 14 at 3:00 pm. Tickets $35 at http://redhookcherryorchard.eventbrite.com. Group discount and student/senior rush tickets are available. For more information call 718-395-3218 or visit http://redhooktheater.org. Featuring Eusebio Arenas, Stephanie Batchelder, Zakaria Bellahcene, Elly-Anne Ehrman, Angela L. Fraser, Dale Freeman, Cassie Gilling, Larry Gutman, Saim Hyder, Crystal Joy, Shaun Lamory, Cyrus Salvia, Brent White and David Woodrow. Directed and adapted by Reg Flowers. Costumes and Scenic Design by Pete Ascolese. Lighting Design by Christopher Studley.
