Sources Confirm Arrests & Ongoing Investigation Into NYCHA Kickback Scheme

When: Monday, August 13, 2018

Where: Sources Confirm Arrests & Ongoing Investigation Into NYCHA Kickback Scheme

NYCHA is BACK in the news.... From Kings County Politics.com: Arrests have already been made and there is an ongoing investigation into a massive kickback scheme involving New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) jobs to repair Superstorm Sandy damage, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation. KCP first reported the kickback scheme last Friday as happening in Coney Island, but has learned since it is a citywide investigation involving construction companies and nefarious characters known on the street as “the coalition,” getting low-income individuals on NYCHA job sites at prevailing wages for kickback “donations.” Sources say the city’s Department of Investigation (DOI) is involved in the investigation. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is also looking through several complaints regarding the investigation. Read full article here...

Petition to Bring Back the B71 Bus

When: Apr 19, 2018-Apr 19, 2019

Where: Online

Bring back our bus! Restore the B71 with a new link through Red Hook to Manhattan Posted on October 10, 2017 Brooklynites were hit hard in 2010 when the MTA eliminated the B71, which ran along Union Street, and was a lifeline for seniors, students, and families. To this day, every time I visit the Eileen Dugan Senior Center, they have a very clear message: “Bring back our bus!” Despite economic recovery and significant population growth along the route, the line has never been restored, leaving thousands of riders stranded. Meanwhile, nearby residents of Red Hook remain in a transit desert, despite physical proximity to Manhattan. That’s why neighbors are rallying to demand the B71+ -- a new bus route for Brooklyn that will revive the cross-Gowanus B71 with a new link through Red Hook to Lower Manhattan. If you agree, please sign the B71+ petition today:

Join Us for a Rally for Safety at Hamilton Ave

When: Apr 23, 2018 9:00-9:30 am

Where: Hamilton Avenue Intersection

Remember the last time you ran across Hamilton Ave fearing for your life? Was it this morning? The intersection at Hamilton Avenue is a crucial entryway to Red Hook - and we all deserve an upgrade. This was the topic of a research project in 2016 for a group of RHI Youth Researchers who studied the issue of safety at Hamilton Avenue. The team interviewed 110 residents about their experiences in crossing the intersection and found major safety issues including not enough time to cross the street and cars turning illegally. The study also found issues of poor lighting, unclean conditions, and sidewalks in disrepair. Over the past few weeks, as the topic of Brooklyn street safety has been happening in response to the tragedy in Park Slope, we've been promoting the study to highlight our own major street safety issues here on Hamilton Ave. The Borough President Eric Adams heard about the study and will be joining Youth Researchers at the intersection for a rally to call for safety improvements. The rally will be part of the BP's "Bike to Work" ride to Brooklyn Borough Hall on April 23rd.   We will gather at the intersection at 9:00am with "dream Hamilton Avenue" artwork and signs and rally until about 9:30am. Join us in demanding safety improvements for Red Hook's main pathway in and out of the community! Please RSVP to the invite if you can make it - thanks! More info to come on a "pizza art party" to prepare for this event.
