Hurricane Maria has devastated the island of Puerto Rico as it was dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and an economic crisis.  Donations needed: Toiletries, Canned Foods, Batteries, Flashlights, Women's Hygiene Products, Water Filters, Baby Formula, Diapers, Wipes, Underwear and Socks. Recruiting New Peacemakers

Where: Red Hook Community Justice Center - 88 Visitation Place Brooklyn, NY 11231

The Red Hook Community Justice Center is recruiting people from Red Hook to be peacemakers using a traditional Native American way of practicing justice that focuses on healing rather than punishment. Peacemakers will go through a FREE training, which will include meeting with peacemakers from the Cayuga and Navajo Nation. Trained peacemakers will help young people to resolve conflicts, restore relationships, and prevent violence. Orientation: September 26th from 5pm-7pm at the Justice Center. Peacemakers that currently live in or around Red Hook’s NYCHA will receive a $175 stipend upon completion of the training. For more information, please contact the or (718) 923-8287

AmeriCorps Opportunity for Students

We are currently recruiting AmeriCorps members to join the Red Hook Community Resilience Corps as our minimum time members. Youth between the ages of 17-24 who may be pursuing a HSE/ HS diploma are eligible to apply. We have a summer program and school year that youth can choose from. Click here for more info.  School Year- You will be responsible for 300 hours; most hours will be completed from attending classes. On Fridays, you would come to the Justice Center for workshops and mentoring sessions. They will work one on one with another AmeriCorps member. Members will receive an educational award of $1,221. The program will run between May and October. Summer Program- You will be responsible for 300 hours, some of these hours will come from attending class.  The majority of the hours will be from their participation in our Summer Internship program in which they will be trained and place at a site, enhancing their job skills. Members will receive a stipend of $800-$900 in addition to the education award of $1,221. The program will run between June and September.
