Recruiting New Peacemakers

Where: Red Hook Community Justice Center - 88 Visitation Place Brooklyn, NY 11231

The Red Hook Community Justice Center is recruiting people from Red Hook to be peacemakers using a traditional Native American way of practicing justice that focuses on healing rather than punishment. Peacemakers will go through a FREE training, which will include meeting with peacemakers from the Cayuga and Navajo Nation. Trained peacemakers will help young people to resolve conflicts, restore relationships, and prevent violence. Orientation: September 26th from 5pm-7pm at the Justice Center. Peacemakers that currently live in or around Red Hook’s NYCHA will receive a $175 stipend upon completion of the training. Free Cooking Demonstrations at the Red Hook Community Farm

Weekly free cooking demonstrations at the Red Hook Community Farm, every Saturday through mid-November. Each week a different fruit or vegetable is chosen and prepared. By attending a 25-minute workshop, you receive: 1. A sample 2. A copy of the featured recipe 3. $2 in HealthBucks that can be spent at the farm stand (or any farmers market) Drop-in attendees welcome, but you can also schedule a visit or farm tour. The Waterfront Museum: COME ABOARD OUR HISTORIC VESSEL

When: Thursday, July 13, 2017

Where: Waterfront Museum 290 Conover

The Waterfront Museum is open year-round on SATURDAYS 1-5pm and THURSDAYS 4-8pm(Closed Thanksgiving and last two weeks of December) for free tours for families and individuals when the barge is docked in Red Hook. Cross the gangway onto the 1914 historic vessel.  The Lehigh Valley Barge #79 is on the National Register of Historic Places--the only wooden barge of its kind still floating. Group tours are available for a fee any day by appointment by calling David at (718) 624-4719. A visit includes a look at the Captain's original living quarters, the tools used by longshoremen and stevedores and the gongs and bells of the tug and barge system. Videos tell the story of the barge's rescue from the mud and kids love the ball machine that whirls, jumps and plays music via gravity.
